Remember all those stressful moments when you thought that you would not be able to make it through; like your examinations, a project deadline at work, or continuous work stress without rest, etc.
Always Get Sick After A Stressful Period?
Well it was not a stroke of luck that you passed through that stressful period. It is usually called the ‘the let-down effect’. This is basically a repeated cycle in which people often suffer with an illness or develop flare-ups of a chronic condition.
This does not occur while your period of distress or the on the bad timings but it is sort of an aftermath that follows when the stressful period has passed.
These have been studies that have indicated that the let-down of alleged stress gives rise to flare-ups of pain and other illness.
It has been observed that the tendency of panic attacks is usually more on weekends than on weekdays and people tend to get more hyper and lose control of their mental conditions.
It is a declared fact that stress is the cause of several diseases and causes enormous amount of damage to mental health as well. But the latest research has found that people who have been through a highly stressful phase fall severely ill after that phase has passed.
Our body is very adaptive to situations and in situations when there is excess stress the body releases hormones like glucocorticoids (like cortisol), catecholamines (like norepinephrine) and adrenaline.
These result in general behaviour depending on the processing of the mind whether it wants to escape the stressful situation or prepare to counter it.
While this phenomenon is going on, hormone called glucocorticoids can fuel up latent viral infections such as herpes simplex 1 causing cold sores and Epstein-Barr virus that usually results in fatigue, fever, sore throat and swollen glands.
These symptoms usually start to show after a few days as explained by behavioural neuroscientist. This is the reason why the symptoms of illness start to occur after the stressful period has passed.
Research has also establishes that when the brain is under pressure, the stress hormones develop a restraint against the perception of pain. This is necessary is a severe situation because it provides the strength to get out of the difficult situation and reach a steady phase without having experienced pain or confusion.
This is another reason why the body takes time to calm down and steady the rush of all those hormones resulting in the illness that follows.
There are a lot of ways in which a sudden fall in mental pressure can cause misbalance in the natural functioning of your body. Mental stress is similar to physical stress in a lot of ways. It triggers the diseases and opens a loop hole for them to well on your body.
This is the reason why mental stress is called more dangerous because the brain controls the release of all kinds of hormones and if the brain is under pressure it will cause a malfunction in your body being the real reason you get sick after a stressful period has ended.
